Welcome to the first edition of our monthly Memorial Villages Animal Hospital newsletter! We’re thrilled to kick off this new tradition of sharing pet care tips, exclusive offers, and insights from our team. At MVAH, we’re all about empowering you to make informed decisions about your pet’s health and ensuring you have access to the exceptional veterinary care that defines us.
Many pet owners feel a flutter of nerves when scheduling a dental cleaning for their pet. We get it: they’re a member of your family, so seeing them be put under for something that doesn’t require anesthesia in human healthcare can be overwhelming. You may be wondering if anesthesia is safe, or “worth it” for a dental cleaning. If this sounds familiar—you’re not alone. These are common concerns that we hear regularly!
However, dental disease is far more common and serious than many pet owners realize. Left untreated, it can lead to painful infections, tooth loss, and even issues with the heart, liver, and kidneys. A professional dental cleaning is one of the best ways to protect your pet’s long-term health while also freshening up that breath we all know can be less than pleasant sometimes!
For a limited time, we’re making it even easier to get your pet the care they need: Save 20% on Dental Cleanings in February and March!
If the thought of anesthesia or the procedure itself has kept you on the fence, here’s what to expect—before, during, and after—so you can book with confidence:
Before the Procedure
We always start with thorough pre-anesthetic screening. This includes bloodwork to make sure your pet’s organs are functioning well and a full physical exam to catch any hidden issues. We tailor anesthesia to your pet’s specific needs based on factors like age, breed, and medical history. If we spot any red flags, we’ll adjust the plan or refer you to a specialist. You’ll also get instructions on when to stop food or water and what to expect on the day of the procedure.
During the Procedure
A professional dental cleaning is performed under general anesthesia for a pain-free experience. This allows us to remove plaque and tartar below the gumline (where trouble often hides), take digital X-rays to detect problems not visible on the surface, and, if necessary, extract severely damaged teeth. While your pet is under, a veterinarian and two trained technicians continuously monitor heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, and more. If anything unexpected appears, we’ll pause and call you before moving forward.
After the Procedure
Once we’re finished, you’ll receive a call to let you know that your pet is recovering and determine a pickup time. When you arrive at MVAH, we’ll go over any medications—like pain relief or antibiotics—your pet might need, post-op instructions, and offer tips for at-home dental care. Most pets bounce back quickly, a little sleepy at first but usually back to their normal routines by the next day. We’ll also follow up to make sure everything is going smoothly.
Why Choose MVAH?
Simply put, we’re pet parents too, and we get it. We prioritize compassion, excellence, integrity, and education in every aspect of our care. Our focus is on giving you peace of mind and ensuring your pet is treated like family.
